Fear and ignorance should not drive abortion debate

I did not think I would need to defend the right to safe abortions again. Abortion is no longer a criminal offence in Australia. There are well-reasoned and effective legal structures around abortions based on healthcare and women’s choice. It is broadly accepted that if you’re pregnant, it’s your decision to have children, or not.

Tweed/Byron Police District have said in a social media post, ‘Over the past week, 29 people were arrested and charged at Tweed Heads and Byron Bay Police Stations with a variety of offences. In total, 64 people had legal action taken against them’.

‘Notable matters of community interest include:

• 10 people were charged with domestic violence related offences. In total there were 7 charges for contravening Apprehended Violences Orders, 3 charges for assault in a domestic violence context, 3 charges for stalking/intimidation and 1 charge for damaging property.

• 4 people were charged with assault, including the assault of a police officer and a retail worker.

• 2 people were charged with sexual assault offences, including 1 against a child.

• It was very disappointing that 27 people were charged with traffic related offences. This includes:

13 charges for driving with a prescribed concentration of alcohol

3 charges for driving whilst suspended

3 charges for driving whilst disqualified (all were repeat offenders and 2 were also driving with a prescribed concentration of alcohol)

2 charges for driving under the influence of drugs and both were repeat offenders

1 charge for driving with a licence that expired more than 2 years prior.

• A 26-year-old female from Tweed Heads South was charged on 6 November 2025 with shoplifting and assaulting a retail worker. She is due to appear at the Tweed Heads Local Court on 12 January 2026. Note: In June 2023, the NSW Government passed laws creating a stand-alone offence for ‘assault and other action against retail workers’ to reflect the seriousness and increase of abuse and violent behaviour from customers towards staff. This conduct is completely unacceptable and police are committed to taking enforcement action.

• A 16-year-old youth was arrested and charged on 7 November 2025 with possessing digital blueprints for making prohibited weapons. They remain bail refused to next appear before the Children’s court on 19 November 2025.

• A 46-year-old male from Byron Bay was arrested and charged on 7 November 2025 with sexual intercourse without consent. He will appear at the Byron Bay Local Court on 24 November 2025.

• A 16-year-old youth was arrested and charged on 10 November 2025 with leading police on a pursuit through Tweed Heads South into Banora Point while driving an unregistered vehicle and not being licensed. The youth also had property in their custody believed to be stolen. Bail was refused and they are next due to appear at Children’s Court on 19 November 2025.

• A 76-year-old male from the local area was arrested and charged on 12 November 2025 by specialist child abuse investigators with 4 child sexual offences. He was bail refused by Police and will next appear at the Tweed Heads Local Court on 1 December 2025.

• Operation Cyclesafe continues across the District which saw a 40-year-old male from Tweed Heads arrested and charged on 12 November 2025 with 4 offences after he was detected riding a bicycle whilst not wearing a helmet. He tried to evade Police and was finally stopped where he was found in possession of a homemade taser and implements used in the commission of property offences such as the theft of e-bikes. He was bail refused by Police to appear at the Tweed Heads Local Court on 24 November 2025.

‘Operation E-Voltage continues and our officers are having many interactions with E-Bike riders in the community. It is great to see many people obeying the road rules and wearing helmets, however the non-wearing of helmets and riding of illegal E-bikes will continue to be targeted by police. Youth Command Police continue to provide education to both primary and high schools students about safe riding and the consequences of riding illegal bikes so personal responsibility is key.

‘Significant recent matters relating to this operation include:

• A 16-year-old youth was charged in September 2025 with unlicensed riding after being detected riding a mountain bike modified to effectively become an electric motorbike. He was sighted riding on his back wheel in excess of the posted speed limit. The bike was seized along with a GoPro camera which contained footage of similar incidents. The youth recently appeared at the Tweed Heads Local Court and a conviction was recorded. The youth was disqualified for a 6-month period which will delay the youth from obtaining a Learner driver’s licence.

• On the evening of Friday 7 November 2025, Police responded to Brunswick Heads concerning youths riding illegal electric motorbikes around the CBD and causing issues at a business. A 15-year-old youth was arrested for riding an unregistered and uninsured illegal E-Bike. He was conveyed to Brunswick Heads Police Station and his parents were contacted. The illegal E-Bike was seized and towed from the scene for destruction and legal action has commenced against the youth under the Young Offenders Act.

‘In the last 12 days, Tweed/Byron Police District has responded to 960 calls for service from the community. Officers also fielded many unlogged calls and assisted hundreds of customers who attended our various police stations. Some of these calls may be resolved in minutes, some may take hours and others can result in ongoing investigations over several months and years’.
