The Greens NSW Party Room says it is ‘standing up with Hannah Thomas, survivor of police violence, and calling for charges to be laid against any NSW police officer that assaulted any member of the community in the wake of the scenes of police violence in the Sydney CBD on Monday 9 February’.
This follows calls for an independent investigation by the NSW police watchdog, the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission (LECC), into the entire planned police operation and response on Monday evening and any officers that engaged in violence against the community.
Greens MP, solicitor, and spokesperson for Justice Sue Higginson said, ‘No person is above the law in NSW, and where police officers have committed offences, they should be investigated and charged where an offence has occurred.
‘If the LECC do not have the powers that they need to independently investigate the police operation and conduct, the Greens will introduce legislation into the NSW parliament to deliver any changes necessary. We expect all members of parliament to support any reforms in the name of public safety and sound policing.’
Damning evidence
Hannah Thomas, Lawyer, activist and former Greens candidate for Grayndler said, ‘Some of the video evidence from Monday night is even more damning than what we had at Belmore seven months ago – and that footage was enough to eventually force a police officer to be charged.
‘My case is the rare exception of a police officer being held to account despite a concerted political effort to spin the narrative in his favor – and it took three months and enormous public pressure to get here. We should not have to wait months again when the evidence is this overwhelming.’
