A 25-year-old Sydneyside P-plater is to appear before Byron Bay Local Court next month accused of speeding at nearly 200 kilometres per hour near Brunswick Heads.
Tweed Byron police said they first saw the young man from Petersham on Saturday night driving an orange BMW M4 Competition at 153km/h in the 100km/h zone near Ewingsdale around 10:35pm.
Officers said they caught up to the rear of the vehicle, which had green P‑plates displayed, whereupon the driver started to drive even faster.
Police published a photo showing his alleged detected speed of 198km/h in a 110km/h zone.
Speeding driver had ‘work commitments’
Provisional P2 licence holders are prohibited from driving certain high‑performance vehicles, including the particular car the alleged offender was driving.
They’re also restricted to a maximum speed of 100km/h in NSW.
Pursuing officers ‘activated all warning devices,’ they reported, and were able to stop the vehicle a short distance later.
They said the driver showed them his licence electronically before returning negative results to breath and drug tests, saying he was travelling to Brisbane for work commitments.
Officers suspended his licence pending a court appearance on 13 April.
He’s charged with driving at a dangerous speed; exceeding the speed limit by more than 45km/h; and driving a prohibited vehicle.
Police couldn’t impose sanctions on the vehicle as the driver was not the owner.
