Paris may have haute couture, but Nimbin has always preferred its fashion with a little more hemp, handmade flair and disregard for the rulebook.
The long-running Nimbin Fashion Show returns to the Town Hall tomorrow, bringing together local designers, wearable art and sustainable fashion for two colourful trips down the catwalk.
After a year’s hiatus, the non-profit community event will feature designers of all ages and experience levels, with original collections ranging from recycled and repurposed creations to more conventional clothing with a distinctly Nimbin twist.
Organisers describe the show as ‘a key part of Nimbin’s creative and sustainable community’, with this year’s event putting particular emphasis on original design and creative expression.
Sustainability has long been woven into the local fashion scene. Previous Nimbin shows have championed recycling, reusing, natural fibres and one-off pieces rather than mass-produced clothing.
The show is also very much a community production. The Nimbin School of Arts, which has hosted cultural events in the village since 1904, is supporting the event, with proceeds helping maintain and repair the historic Town Hall.
The School of Arts says its aim is to ‘foster the arts’, with the Fashion Show sitting alongside events including MardiGrass performances, cabaret, poetry and visual-art exhibitions.
There will be two shows tomorrow, with a matinee at 1.30pm and an evening performance at 6pm.
