History teachers from the Northern Rivers are being encouraged to apply for the new NSW History Teachers Anzac Scholarship, designed to send a history teacher to the trenches, and bring the experience back to NSW classrooms.
‘A history teacher could swap the classroom for the battlefields of Gallipoli, the Western Front or Thailand’s Hellfire Pass,’ said the press release.
‘This new NSW History Teachers Anzac Scholarship provides the opportunity for one NSW teacher to visit one of our most significant historic battlefields, to bring first-hand knowledge back to the classroom – and share their experience with the broader teaching community. The scholarship is worth around $10,000 and covers return economy airfares from Sydney and a fully guided land tour led by an expert Historian, with the winner also able to bring a companion at a discounted rate.’
Applicants can nominate one of four itineraries: an eight-day tour of Gallipoli taking in the Dawn Service at Anzac Cove; a ten-day tour of the Western Front finishing at the Australian National Memorial in Villers-Bretonneux; a four-day tour to Ypres in Belgium with a service at Polygon Wood; or a five-day tour to Hellfire Pass in Thailand, following the route of the WWII Thai-Burma Railway.
The scholarship has been launched by the History Teachers Association of NSW and Mat McLachlan Battlefield Tours.
