Nothing illustrates Western hypocrisy quite like the double standards applied to nuclear weapons.

Trump insists the US-Israeli aggression against Iran is all about preventing Iran from getting nuclear weapons, a totally bogus pretext reminiscent of the WMD lies that led to the 2003 invasion of Iraq. But unlike Israel, Iran is a fully ratified signatory to the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT), and unlike the US, Iran is fully compliant with its treaty obligations.

Israel refuses to confirm or deny that it possesses nuclear weapons, but ever since Mordechai Vanunu exposed Israel’s secret nuclear weapons program to the Sunday Times in 1986, the world has known that Israel has nuclear weapons. Yet there is no pressure on Israel to join the NPT or allow IAEA inspections, no threat of sanctions or penalty of any kind.

Israel is permitted to use the implicit threat of nuclear attack to get away with relentless aggression, illegal occupation, and genocidal apartheid.

The United States, which wants to be boss of the whole world, shows scant regard for its treaty obligations and rank contempt for diplomacy. When it ratified the NPT it committed to reducing its stockpile of nuclear weapons and eventually eliminating them altogether, but it has made no effort to meet that commitment. The US also pledged to allow other countries to pursue civil nuclear power, but instead it has conspired with Israel to attack Iran’s peaceful nuclear industry and murder Iranian nuclear scientists.

According to US Director of National Intelligence Gabbard and IAEA chief Grossi, there’s no evidence to support accusations that Iran is pursuing a nuclear weapon, but that hasn’t stopped Israel and the US from threatening Iran with nuclear annihilation. This behaviour seems intended to convince Iran that it needs a nuclear deterrent. And if Iran decides to leave the NPT and build nuclear weapons, it will be the direct consequence of this criminal aggression against Iran.
