Extinction Rebellion (XR) Lismore and their supporters say they will protest at the Woodlark Street branch of the National Australia Bank (NAB) from 12pm tomorrow, Tuesday, September 14.
An XR spokesperson said the NAB has lent seven billion dollars to fossil fuel companies over the last 5 years, greatly contributing to global heating, extreme weather events and our dangerously unstable climate.
The theatrical event will inform bank staff and the public about the consequences of the irresponsibility of NAB investments.
Spokesperson Daisy Nutty said the group are everyday people standing up for the planet. ‘We are reaching the end game and it’s time to do whatever we can to protect our future.
‘NAB has recently made a number of terrible decisions to increase its support of massive fossil fuel projects. In September, they are releasing their new Oil & Gas Policy, which presents a great opportunity to build pressure on key decision makers.’
XR says this year, NAB stepped in to finance the worlds biggest coal port, Newcastle, after ANZ pulled out and they are also supporting the most polluting fossil fuel project ever attempted in Australia, Woodside’s Burrup Hub in WA.
Ms Nutty said XR are asking the staff to put pressure on their employers to address the climate crisis and divest from fossil fuels. ‘We are asking NAB customers to also put pressure on their bank to stop their money from destroying the planet and consider moving their custom to a more ethical bank, which is none of the big four.’
