Two quick thinking children likely saved their family’s lives when a mattress in their Murwillumbah rental home caught fire on Sunday night.
It has been revealed the house did not have a fire alarm installed.
Murwillumbah fire captain Greg Hayes told local media the children had noticed the mattress smouldering in the living room and alerted an older man who lived in the house, who attempted to put out the fire with an extinguisher.
Murwillumbah fire brigade extinguished the fire and gave the man emergency oxygen treatment until ambulance paramedics arrived.
