I applaud Byron Council’s recent decision to create clearer beach signage in relation to dangerous waters, an aspect of our natural environment, for visitors and locals alike. We don’t want another tragedy to occur when someone goes out for a surf.
Would it be possible to have clearer beach signage in relation to the bird and animal habitats, another aspect of our natural environment, installed as well?
Last week at the Clarkes Beach estuary/drain I witnessed a tourist shrieking and throwing sand and sticks at a bird behaving protectively as a result of having its nesting site disturbed.
As the tide was up, she ventured into an area most locals know is off-limits, in order to proceed further up the beach without having to cross the estuary.
Quite often I see beach-goers ignoring the dune protection fences, leaving litter about, bringing their dogs as well.
With relation to the proposed relocation of the monthly markets to the beach foreshore, please don’t! It would seem wise to heed the Clean and Green Team’s voice, after all their years of care-taking this environmentally sensitive area.
