Condolences have gone out for Clarence Valley councillor and farmers’ market advocate Jeremy Challacombe, and his wife Sue, who were killed when their car ran off the road in South Grafton yesterday.
Emergency services were called to the Pacific Highway just after 2.30pm yesterday, after the Challacombes’ car left the road and crashed into a drain.
Sixty-two-year-old Sue, who was the only passenger in the car, died at the scene.
Cr Challacombe, 67, was taken by ambulance to Coffs Harbour Health Campus in a critical condition, where he later died of his injuries.
Cr Challacombe also presented a regular Friday morning spot on ABC north coast radio each week, outlining what was available at the region’s farmers’ markets, for which he was a passionate advocate.
He had previously been on the NSW National Party executive and was an active member of the Clarence Valley branch.
NSW Nationals Chairman Bede Burke said the party was ‘in shock’ over the news.
‘Jeremy and Sue Challacombe were a fixture in the National Party for almost 20 years. Jeremy was known locally and across the state as a passionate and very frank advocate for his community, but he was also a consummate gentleman and a very good friend to many members of the Party,’ he said in a media release.
Jeremy and Sue Challacombe leave behind three children and several grandchildren.
