All Our Exes Live in Texas is a fantasy draft of Sydney musical talent: Elana Stone, Katie Wighton, Hanna Crofts and Georgia Mooney – all beautiful performers in their own right – combining in four-part folk heaven. They sing about love, punch-ups and everything in between… so on the eve of their Mullum show, Seven caught up for a few short and curlies.
So why did you choose a name like All Our Exes Live in Texas?
We were searching for a name and typed in ‘Worst Country Song Titles of All Time’ and All My Exes Live in Texas was on the top of the list. It’s a George Strait song that we will have to learn how to play one day…
What brought you four together?
Our friend James from The Morrisons booked a country-themed night at The Vanguard in Sydney and said, ‘I’m booking you guys; you should put a band together,’ so we picked up instruments and got a set together!
Why do you think love and heartbreak are such grand themes in music?
Why do we never tire of them? I mean that’s just writing songs about life and your experiences – it’s just another outlet of expression of something you want to get off your chest or tell a story… I will never tire of a well-written folk/country song. It’s an incredible art form and will always hit a chord within you when you find a beautiful song.
What is it do you think that makes AOELIT such a unique melodic ensemble?
All four of us are solo musicians and do regular solo shows – I think the uniqueness of AOELIT comes from this combination of four really different musicians coming together to play and write music together. We are all weird and funny and musically very different – so hopefully that all comes together to create our unique sound.
Do you always manage perfect harmonies? Are there ever times when someone falls off the perch?
Ha-ha! I’m sure it is very hard for anyone to manage perfect harmonies! We make mistakes all the time but that’s half the fun of our band – we don’t take ourselves too seriously. It’s not a big deal if you make a mistake and I think that means we just keep playing together and improve! And that hopefully it’s a good time for the audience to watch!
How would you describe your onstage performance?
Someone described it as a mothers’ group once! That’s always stuck with me. We play each other’s songs together, make jokes, have a great time – we want our live show to be both musically and personally entertaining for the audience.
What should our local crowds expect at your Mullum show?
We have never played in Mullum before so expect four pretty excited ladies! That and some songs about heartbreak, perfect harmonies and probably a bunch of mistakes!
All Our Exes Live in Texas play the Courthouse in Mullumbimby on Thursday with special guest Merryn Boller.
Show at 7.30pm, and tickets either at the door (if available) or at www.mullummusic.com.
