Prime Minister Tony Abbott is expected to announce an $89 billion, 20-year-program as part of the government’s long-awaited plan for continuous construction of new warships in South Australia.
The plan is understood to comprise $39 billion for ships and $50 billion for submarines and would sustain about 1000 jobs, the Adelaide Advertiser reports.
A program for continuous construction of the Navy’s workhorse Anzac frigates would likely see some of the Anzacs retired ahead of schedule, while new vessels would remain in service for around 20 years rather than the current 30 years.
