In many ANZAC Day ceremonies a cenotaph is a central focus as a place to remember soldiers both returned and fallen.
The Byron Bay RSL Sub Branch announced in early February that they would receive $39,400 in federal funding to refurbish the memorial gates and build a cenotaph wall near the Recreation Grounds on Marvel Street and work has now been completed.
The funding was granted from the Anzac Centenary Local Grants Program to assist community groups to commemorate the service and sacrifice Australian servicemen and women in WWI. Other money to support the work was raised by local organisations.
‘The original gate was dedicated by His Excellency Governor General Lord Forster PC KCMG on November 23 in 1921’, says Byron RSL President Robert Asquith. ‘Major (retired) Graeme Davis OAM CSM, Vietnam and Long Tan Veteran, will be the re-dedicating Officer.’
The ceremony will be held on Thursday August 4 from 11am and RSL members are inviting everyone to come along and be a part of this historical event.
