Six chickens were killed and a pig injured in an early morning attack at the permaculture centre, Djanbung Gardens, at Nimbin.
Founder Robyn Francis said staff were devastated this morning to discover the dead and injured animals.
‘We found six chickens dead, two in the chook house with severed heads, one in a bamboo clump and three in the pig house,’ Ms Francis said.
Polly the pig was also injured, with lacerations to her face and rump.
Another chicken was found with her beak split, and had to be put down by distressed staff.
Ms Francis believes the attack happened between 4am and 6am this morning (Wednesday).
‘We discovered the massacre at 7.30am,’ she said.
‘We’ve got international guests staying here and with the beautiful full moon they were up talking until about 3.30am. Someone was then up at 6am and didn’t hear a thing and then the chickens were discovered at 7.30am, which is when we feed them.’

Ms Francis said the latch on the chicken house door was damaged and three Balinese-style sickles were missing that were stored in a box on the roof of the pig house.
Other animals, including ducks and geese were not attacked.
‘It was our chook house with heritage breeds and layers that was targeted. I just find it unfathomable and incredibly distressing,’ she said.
The attack has been reported to the police.
