Michael Phillip Martin will stand trial in the Supreme Court starting today over the alleged 2014 murder of his father with a samurai sword to cash in on his life insurance.
The 25-year-old was charged with the murder of 46-year-old Michael Anthony Martin in March 2015 following a nine month investigation by Strike Force Areae, comprised of officers from the NSW Homicide Squad and the Tweed Byron Local Area Command.
He is listed to appear in the Supreme Court at Lismore before Justice Peter Hamill from 10 am.
Police have alleged Mr Martin jnr took out $2.5 million in life insurance policies before arranging a home invasion at his Murwillumbah unit in April 2014.
As a result of the alleged attack, Mr Martin snr was hospitalised with serious injuries.
He recovered and returned home to fall victim to another alleged home invasion in June, but this incident was fatal.
Just a week before he was arrested and charged with murder, Mr Martin jnr appealed for information about his fathers attack via the media.
His ex-wife Candace Martin and former Byron Bay school girl Jessica Honey Fallon are also charged with murder over their alleged roles in the killing.
The court has previously heard allegations that police have a statement about the alleged attack revealing that a samurai sword was used and then ground down to hide the evidence.
Mr Martin jnr has spent since march 2015 in custody after unsuccessfully applying for Supreme Court bail, which was denied due to the risk of him fleeing and failing to appear in court.
