Tweed Year 10 students keen to make a contribution to the environment could win a free place on a three-day Outward Bound course designed to help them develop and undertake an environmental initiative in their school setting.

Tweed Shire Council will pay for up to 18 students in the shire to attend the course at Outward Bound’s northern base, near Kunghur, from September 26 to 28.

Students will be taken out of the classroom and into the Tweed wilderness to learn skills in leadership, communication and collaboration, building their confidence and giving them the tools to take on an environmental project or initiative on their return.

The group will be led by an experienced outdoor instructor, accompanied by a Tweed Shire Council environmental leader and a high school teacher.

After the camp, the students will be mentored by Outward Bound staff and Tweed Shire Council staff to design and implement an environmental initiative within their school, such as: a campaign to minimise landfill waste; an energy or water-saving initiative; a campaign to encourage active travel; organising a teen clothes swap; tree planting or regenerating a garden; or, a community campaign to stop domestic animals killing wildlife.

‘We want the students to have fun, connect with the incredible natural environment we live in, hear from others in their age group and take action on environmental opportunities that matter to them,’ Council’s Sustainability Program Leader Debbie Firestone said.

‘Our aim is to have one or two students from each of the 12 secondary schools in the Tweed attend,’ Ms Firestone said.

All Tweed Shire Year 10 students are invited to apply for a free place on this course. Applications close at 5pm on Monday 6 August 2018. Successful applicants will be announced after 13 August 2018.

General Program Information and Application Forms are available online at http://www.tweed.nsw.gov.au/EducationalTours or from your school’s Year 10 Year Advisor.
