NSW Labor MLC Rose Jackson. Wikipedia.

Newly minted NSW Labor MLC Rose Jackson (daughter of former ABC journalist Liz Jackson 1951 – 2018), has used her maiden speech to call for marijuana to be legalised.

She told parliament on June 5, ‘You cannot believe alcohol and cigarettes can be legal and not marijuana’.

‘There is no evidence to suggest that it is more dangerous or addictive than these other substances’.

She also called for the legalisation of abortion, which is illegal in NSW under the NSW Crimes Act 1900, sections 82, 83, 84.

And just last week, she had support from parliament to put on record its concern about ‘the practice of intimidating and harassing journalists and, indeed, our staunch and unwavering commitment to freedom’.

She said, ‘The laws under which the raids were authorised [on the ABC and a Newscorp journalist] were designed to combat terrorism and serious cybercrime such as online paedophile networks and major international hacking operations’.

‘The use of those laws to prosecute whistleblowers and target Australian journalists is a major departure from their intended and proper use and raises questions about whether the laws are in fact appropriate in a modern liberal democratic nation like Australia’.

The ABC has launched legal proceedings over the raid, as reported Monday.

Support The Echo

Keeping the community together and the community voice loud and clear is what The Echo is about. More than ever we need your help to keep this voice alive and thriving in the community.

Like all businesses we are struggling to keep food on the table of all our local and hard working journalists, artists, sales, delivery and drudges who keep the news coming out to you both in the newspaper and online. If you can spare a few dollars a week – or maybe more – we would appreciate all the support you are able to give to keep the voice of independent, local journalism alive.

  1. Awesome. Out with old politicians and in with the new. See you later old scared foolish lollies you had your chance and you all wasted it.

    • I wish what you are saying were true but we have 3 more years of these turds the LNP in power. Increasing fines and penalties for cannabis related crimes; shutting down our live music events and pandering to the booze and gambling industries is all they know how to do .. one voice against them will not be enough .. we need to write to Rose and let her know we support her stand .. if everyone of us did that she would not be standing alone .. [email protected]

AND it wouldnt hurt to let the bin chicken know too ..

  2. Please Rose, this is such an important issue for Australians. It should not be about the wealth of a few when the health of Australians is at stake. Criminilisation of Cannabis was ONLY ever about corruption and corporations. Please help us make them accountable for diminishing the quality o fg our lives. I love your commitment and courage. Thankyou, yours sincerely Leslea Riddle

  3. Cannabis needs to be legalised – simply because
it works far better than the cocktail the medical
profession & legal drug-makers insist is best.
We can’t have half ‘broke’ MDs & Specialists
now can we! As for the Bin Chicken – she knows
there’s no bucks to be made if it becomes legal.
