Lutheran Pastor Martin Niemöller was interned in Dachau for speaking out against Hitler.
His famous quotation still resonates given the recent raids on journalists by the AFP. ‘First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out – because I was not a socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out – because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out – because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me – and there was no-one left to speak for me.’
Now we have the concerning situation in Australia where freedom of the press is curtailed at the same time as religious freedom is defended. All Australians should be horrified by this and speak out against it.

For four decades The Echo has printed the stories some people loved, some people hated, and some pretended not to read. If you want us to keep telling the truth, the real truth, not the sugar-coated version. We’ll need your support to keep the presses rolling.
