What a crazy time we live in, when tearing down statues of historical figures seems a good idea for some to prove black lives matter.
History cannot be changed by obliterating the memory of tyrants who brought us to this point.
Surely a better idea is to let them stand, but add to their plinths the real facts of what these people did – good and bad.
We could use this opportunity to rewrite the true story of our history, however uncomfortable that may be.
To do that would present a lasting opportunity for us, and future generations, to actually learn from history so we do not have to repeat it.
Let them stand in shame.
