Youth crime is increasing – what to do?

There is something strange going on with youth crime in rural and regional Australia. Normally, I treat hysterical rising delinquency claims with a pinch of salt – explicable by an increase in police numbers, or a headline-chasing tabloid, or a right-wing politician.

The Bellingen Activist Network says these direct actions are a response to ‘both a climate and species extinction crisis’.

‘Communities are increasingly turning towards brave acts of direct action, putting their bodies in the way of irreversible destruction as a last line of defence,’ the network said in a media statement this morning.

‘Almost everyone wants to see native forests protected and Bellingen Activist Network (BAN) is currently experiencing more and more everyday people requesting to be upskilled to take direct actions locally to protect the forests.’

Support The Echo

Keeping the community together and the community voice loud and clear is what The Echo is about. More than ever we need your help to keep this voice alive and thriving in the community.

Like all businesses we are struggling to keep food on the table of all our local and hard working journalists, artists, sales, delivery and drudges who keep the news coming out to you both in the newspaper and online. If you can spare a few dollars a week – or maybe more – we would appreciate all the support you are able to give to keep the voice of independent, local journalism alive.

  1. Well isn’t wonderful to some morals and guts in this god-forsaken country ?
Wonderful heroes who stand up for values our corrupt politicians can’t even grasp the concept of, while demonising those who see more value in a forest, and a tiny and rapidly diminishing wild-life remnant, than just a source of wood pulp for toilet paper, enabling them to sell out this country to foreign interests.
    Well Done ! G”)

  2. I applaud the actions of these brave community members, and urge the Minns’ government to cease all native forest logging.
If Minns is serious about budget repair there is a motza to be saved by shutting this uneconomic and environmentally destructive industry.
