Fear and ignorance should not drive abortion debate

I did not think I would need to defend the right to safe abortions again. Abortion is no longer a criminal offence in Australia. There are well-reasoned and effective legal structures around abortions based on healthcare and women’s choice. A $17.4 million four-storey apartment development will be built close to the centre of Kingscliff under plans approved by Tweed Shire Council last week.

The development at 140-142 Marine Parade will see the demolition of three existing buildings and construction of two four-storey residential flat buildings comprising a total of 24 apartments, plus basement car parking for 52 vehicles, and associated landscaping works.

The apartments, to be owned by Allera Kingscliff, will have a mix of one, two, three and four bedrooms. There is a communal pool, deck and barbecue area, and one of the apartments has an exclusive spa pool.

All three existing trees are to be removed from the site as they are considered ‘low value’.

The buildings will have a maximum height of between 12.7 and 13.5m.

Council staff negotiated some changes to the development prior to approval, including a reduction in proposed apartments from 25 to 24, a revised configuration of the apartments to provide a better mix and diversity of dwellings, improved pedestrian access at ground level.

Prior to the approval, residents raised concerns about flash flooding and storm water run-off, overshadowing, excessive height bulk and scale, noise and lighting. But staff and councillors considered that these had been adequately.

‘The proposal is an appropriate land use for the locality, considering its permissibility in the zone, and the mitigation of any impacts as outlined in this report,’ Council staff said in their comments.

‘The submissions received have been considered in the assessment of this application.’

The development was approved by Tweed councillors at the Council planning committee meeting on November 2.
