Savita worked for Shai (L) at the original Byronian cafe, now they run the Little
Byronian together.

After a ten-year hiatus, iconic Byron cafe The Byronian (est. 1978) has returned with a new location, outside Woolies, and a new name too.

Little Byronian is dishing up delicious Middle Eastern street food, pita pockets, and great coffee roasted locally in Ballina by Old Quarter Coffee Merchants – all served with a healthy side of community and old-school Byron vibes.

Locals will recognise Shai and Savita from their years in the hospitality industry around town or from the old Byronian cafe, which was one of the first cafes to open in Byron, and in its heyday was the local hub of the town.

Shai and Savita are both long-term locals with a passion and focus on good quality, consistent food, coffee, friendly service and just keeping it real.

Savita grew up in Byron and has been a barista on and off since she first worked for Shai as a teenager at the original Byronian.

Shai has been in Byron since 2000. He grew up surrounded by Middle Eastern food and his cooking is in the realms of the beyond. He uses flavours and spices conjured from memories of his grandmother’s kitchen, igniting childhood memories for some, and causing others to become seriously addicted to the Middle Eastern flavours and freshness of his cooking.

At Little Byronian, pastries are handmade and baked fresh daily, pitas are prepared on the spot, and anything not made in-house is sourced from the best local suppliers.

The coffee is 100% fairtrade, organic, and grown by small farmers in South East Asia. Old Quarter Coffee Merchants are Australia’s only specialty coffee roastery that sources 100% South East Asian green beans. Little Byronian has chosen The Village Blend, which is a full-bodied blend sourced from Sumatra, Myanmar and Laos.

The cafe has been an instant hit with some of its original customers, and lots of locals have found their way back to enjoy the food and vibes of the relaxed and friendly café.

Little Byronian: Open 6am-3pm Monday-Friday, 7am-2pm Saturday, 8am-2pm Sunday.

Outside Woolies: 108-114 Jonson St, Byron Bay.
