Byron Shire tops NSW for homelessness

The latest data from the NSW government’s 2024 Street Count has revealed a stark and troubling reality for Byron Bay, which now accounts for the largest number of rough sleepers in NSW. Byron Community Centre says this highlights the urgent need for support for local homeless services like Fletcher Street Cottage.

Can artificial intelligence be used for beach safety?

Is it time for a new approach to beach safety that utilises AI technology to tell locals and visitors where it’s safe to swim?

Scott Hymas is correct in describing large SUVs as an invasive species (Letters, 31 January). A $200,000 Dodge Ram emits 506g of CO2 for every kilometre travelled, a Subaru Outback 168g/km.

Many large SUV drivers love tailgating, forcing smaller cars to endure many of the notoriously bad hinterland roads at destructive and dangerous speed. It amuses them. Having a belching behemoth is a wonderful ego prop for many, especially young male P-plate drivers who more often than not still live with their parents.

Compared with other countries our emission standards are woeful (think Russia). The Liberal/National government coalition continually resisted change. The present government is still facing strong opposition from vested interests.

Keeping the community together and the community voice loud and clear is what The Echo is about. More than ever we need your help to keep this voice alive and thriving in the community.

Like all businesses we are struggling to keep food on the table of all our local and hard working journalists, artists, sales, delivery and drudges who keep the news coming out to you both in the newspaper and online. If you can spare a few dollars a week – or maybe more – we would appreciate all the support you are able to give to keep the voice of independent, local journalism alive.

  1. Don’t I know about this one plus parking we need to start manufacturing cars again and get rid of these monstrosities we need local cars for local roads so many people can’t even drive SUVs let alone the big monsterous trucks

  2. “Many large SUV drivers love tailgating”

Many letter writers make stuff up!

Do you know the emissions of large dogs and horses? People tow horses around in trailers.
    Outregeous, let’s ban them.

And what about people, they are a the real problem.

Let’s limit births, those people who have 2 kids are a real concern. They need larger cars to transport their family, often have dogs..and they consume energy.

    Fairdinkum, it’s getting beyond ridiculous!

  3. Yep we do love how they park in Ballina Main Street with their backside hanging into the narrow lane and make it very difficult to reverse out sight unseen, depending on the grace of other drivers.

  4. C. Davies, last time I looked Australia was a free country, the people that choose to purchase and drive SUV’s are more than entitled to do so, the vehicle serves their purpose of use. If you can’t afford one or don’t need one well that is up to you. Don’t whinge and complain about other peoples choices in life, you are sounding like a do-gooding lefty, do as I say not as I do. The minister for blackouts parrothead bowen’s latest sneaky little pushed through late at night and announced late on Friday to dodge the news legislation for tighter emissions will only have one result, higher priced, under performing vehicles the trades, farmers, company’s need to successfully run their businesses. People in the country want useful vehicles, not pretendy green unworthy garbage like EV’s, they will never live up to the task.

  5. Joachy, guru of everything green and knower of all, if you could afford an urban tank you would have one, admit it. They are so cool, and non lefty green, it just makes you want a few more doesn’t it.
