In a move aimed at bolstering Lismore’s visitor economy, Lismore City Council has greenlit a roadmap to navigate the region towards tourism growth.
The Lismore Destination Management Plan (DMP), officially adopted at last week’s council meeting, underscores the city’s commitment to harnessing its cultural, economic, and social potential through tourism.
Lismore City Mayor Steve Krieg emphasised its pivotal role in steering Lismore, Nimbin, and adjacent villages towards becoming the quintessential alternative and regenerative tourism destination along the NSW North Coast.
‘With a clear vision in sight, we can now do the work required to welcome travellers in search of active, creative, and sustainable lifestyle experiences, all while showcasing our region’s natural beauty and vibrant cultural tapestry,’ he said.
‘This area offers incredible lush hinterland landscapes, bordered by UNESCO World Heritage-listed Gondwana Rainforests and National Parks. We also have a diverse creative arts culture and distinct local community where artistic expression, and alternative lifestyles provide a solid platform to grow visitor experiences.’
Bottom-up approach
Winner of the NSW Tourism Gold Award and Eco Star-accredited accommodation provider Nicole Linder from Contained in Nimbin was one of the many local tourism operators who contributed to the development of the plan.
‘The bottom-up approach to developing the plan meant that we could identify our region’s alternative lifestyle and cultural diversity in a very authentic and focused way,’ she said.
‘Environmentally conscientious travel is a fast-growing segment and Lismore, Nimbin and our villages are perfectly placed to entice these travellers and create the experiences they are searching for.’
Echoing this sentiment, Lismore local business owner and wellness provider Helene Collard from Yemaya Centre for Reiki & Well-being, hailed the DMP as a beacon of hope for Lismore’s recovery, highlighting its emphasis on wellness and relaxation amidst the region’s picturesque landscapes.
‘It celebrates our region as an attractive place to come for rest and relaxation, surrounded by nature and tapping into the many wellbeing and wellness experiences offered throughout our towns and villages,’ she said.
Unique offerings
With an eye on the future, Lismore City Councils Destination Coordinator Karen Hirst emphasised the importance of collaboration in both building, and delivering the plan.
‘We are all now the custodians of this important planning tool, and its successful implementation will be a team effort.
‘We look forward to working alongside local tourism operators to build upon what our region is already renowned for and at the same time developing tourism offerings that have the potential for visitor experiences like nowhere else,’ she said.
The Lismore DMP aims to maximise the benefits of tourism for the region, safeguarding and enhancing its natural and cultural assets for the local communities and businesses of Lismore, Nimbin and Villages.
It also aligns seamlessly with broader strategic frameworks such as the North Coast NSW Destination Management Plan 2030 and the state’s Visitor Economy Strategy 2030, underscoring its integral role in driving regional development.
