Tweed Shire Council is offering a suite of apprenticeship opportunities for young people keen to get a kickstart on their careers in the new year.

Council is once again partnering with Programmed Training Services, who specialise in the employment of apprentices and trainees, to deliver its 2025 Apprenticeship Program, with roles commencing in January 2025.

Several opportunities are on offer across various areas of Tweed Council’s operations, including apprenticeships in Electrical, Mechanical, Signs and Graphics, Fabrication and Welding, Parks and Gardens and Civil Construction.

The Apprenticeship Program involves competency-based, nationally accredited training (apprenticeship four years), combined with on-the-job training, coaching, mentoring and support from Council staff.

Vital role

Tweed Council’s Manager People and Culture Aimee Austin highlighted the vital role the Apprenticeship Program plays in not just launching careers but building a future-ready workforce.

‘Local government is a diverse sector with many moving parts. Council manages more than 50 services for the Tweed community, each presenting its own unique opportunities,’ Ms Austin said.

‘By bringing on apprentices and investing in their growth, we’re not just filling jobs today – we’re building a team that can deliver consistent, high-quality services well into the future.’

Ms Austin added that the program is open to a wide range of applicants.

‘We’re looking for people from all walks of life – whether you’re fresh out of school, looking to pivot in your career or bringing years of experience to the table, there’s an opportunity here for everyone,’ she said.

What the apprentices say

Council Parks and Gardens Apprentice Chelsea Jones, who is currently in her first year completing a Certificate III in Horticulture, said starting with Council had been the kickstart her career needed.

‘One of the best things about my apprenticeship in the Parks and Gardens team at Council is the variety in the work,’ Ms Jones said.

‘Every day’s different, which means I get to be involved in a range of projects that give me real hands-on experience. There’s so much knowledge to tap into at Council too – I’ve had the chance to learn from experts who’ve been in the industry for years.’

Council Electrical Apprentice Mitchell Poole, who is also in his first year completing a Certificate III in Electrotechnology, said it had been great to see the new opportunities being offered by Council.

‘Being an apprentice here has really opened my eyes to just how many different pathways local government offers,’ Mr Poole said.

‘It’s a great place to start your career because the range of roles and opportunities for progression are so broad – there’s always room to grow and explore different directions. The work-life balance at Council is another big plus. It’s fast paced, but there’s a lot of flexibility.’

The apprenticeship positions can be directed to work anywhere within the Tweed Shire, however the roles are currently based in Tweed Heads, Murwillumbah, Cabarita and Chinderah.

Programmed Training Services is the employer for these apprenticeships. Tweed Shire Council is the host organisation only and will not be managing the applications, enquiries or recruitment of these positions.
