The cause of a Mullumbimby fire that destroyed local business premises on Friday evening was still under investigation Monday morning, police said.
The blaze took thirty firefighters two hours to get under control, a Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) spokesman said, with some concerns about the exposure of cylinders requiring extra attention.
Volunteers from local Rural Fire Service brigades were fighting the fire alongside paid workers for FRNSW.
The fire was reported in the premises of local business, Mullumbimby Automotive on Tincogan Street in the town’s centre, at 5.58pm Friday and police were still on scene more than four hours later.
The area was declared a crime scene overnight until police forensic detectives arrived Saturday morning, a Tweed Byron Police District duty officer said.
While the single-level auto mechanic’s shop is reportedly destroyed, neighbouring businesses, the Mullum ex-services club and Liberty fuel station, escaped damage, FRNSW said.
There were no evacuations required and nobody was physically hurt in the fire.
A phone number for the impacted business was disconnected Monday morning.
Byron Shire Mayor Sarah Ndiaye witnessed some of the emergency response and told The Echo while she hadn’t had a chance to speak directly to the business owner, she hoped he was alright.
Mullumbimby Automotive was registered as a business ten years ago.
It’s understood the building belongs to the owners of the petrol station.
