Locals concerned about the recent fish kills in the Richmond River are urged to attend a free community forum tomorrow evening at the Ballina RSL.
Hosted by national fish charity OzFish, the forum will unpack what’s really behind the Richmond River fish kills and offer ideas about how we can stop them from happening again.
Leading the session is OzFish founder and aquatic ecologist Craig Copeland, who will explain how historical changes to the floodplain have contributed to deadly blackwater events that have caused this disaster.
What to do
‘This event has impacted the entire community, and what we’re hearing is that people want to know how we fix it and how they can help,’ said Zoe White, OzFish Projects Manager, NSW North Coast.

‘We look forward to answering these questions and empowering the community to be involved in the desperately needed restoration work on the Richmond River.’
Attendees will hear about the practical solutions that are already underway, how floodplain restoration can help, and how the community can play a vital role in protecting local fish populations.
Organisers say this is a great chance to get informed, ask questions, and be part of the solution.
The free event will be happening at the Ballina RSL tomorrow (3 April), which is at 1 Grant St Ballina, from 6pm to 7pm.
