Fear and ignorance should not drive abortion debate

I did not think I would need to defend the right to safe abortions again. Abortion is no longer a criminal offence in Australia. There are well-reasoned and effective legal structures around abortions based on healthcare and women’s choice. Over the last few years there has been a significant change in land valuations for the Northern Rivers with some people experiencing jumps of 150 per cent. Therefore the role of the Joint Standing Committee on the Office of the Valuer General may be seen as worth paying some attention to.

The Valuer General is an independent statutory officer, who oversees NSW’s land valuation system. The meeting of the Joint Standing Committee is scheduled for May 5 and will be broadcast live for those interested in how the process works. The Committee will be discussing the 2023-24 NSW Valuer General Annual report, which can be  found here.

Committee Chair and Member for Ballina, Adjunct Professor Tamara Smith MP, said the General  Meeting is a key element of the Committee’s oversight function that allows the Committee to  engage with the work of the Valuer General and Value NSW.

‘This General Meeting will be focussed on the activities of the Valuer General and agency staff  since the previous year’s meeting and will be live streamed from the NSW Parliament’s website,’ she said.

‘The Committee is responsible for monitoring the Valuer Generals functions with respect to land  valuations, including the ways these valuations are conducted. As members we have a role ensuring the Valuer General is supported to provide fair and consistent land values in NSW for  rating and taxing.’

‘The Committee uses this meeting to gain insights and gather evidence which supports us to  monitor, review and report on how the Valuer General carries out their land valuation functions and  ensures that the valuation system is delivered to a high standard’.

The hearing will be held in the Jubilee Room at Parliament House and broadcast live on the NSW  Parliament’s website. A hearing schedule for the Seventeenth General Meeting is available on the  Committee’s webpage

Committee members: Adj Prof Tamara Smith MP (Chair), Dr Hugh McDermott MP (Deputy Chair),  Hon Mark Buttigieg MLC, Hon Scott Farlow MLC, Mr David Mehan MP.
