Labor has promised to create the Great Koala National Park (GKNP) since 2015 and this promise combined with Labor’s election in NSW has led to business expectations and development based on that commitment.
110 local businesses from across the mid-north coast have signed a letter to the NSW Parliament Upper House calling on the Minns Government to immediately establish the whole 176,000 hectares of the GKNP.
In the letter businesses highlight the importance of the GKNP to tourism and promotion for the region, water security, and the negative costs that logging imposes on the region.
Former Executive Director of the Wilderness Society, Alec Marr, along with business leaders Kevin Doye and Lindy Davis were joined by Greens MP and spokesperson for the environment Sue Higginson to deliver the letter to the NSW Parliament Upper House calling for the GKNP to be established immediately.
‘This letter is a strong message from those in the community who are being financially harmed from the Government’s delay. It is a strong endorsement for the Government to get on with what they promised and to establish the GKNP in full. Premier Chris Minns would be foolish not to listen, it’s time to act,’ said Ms Higginson.
‘So many in the community have had enough of waiting for the Great Koala National Park. It’s clearly taking too long and it matters, because every day of delay is a day the forests within the Park are destroyed. Now over 100 businesses in the region have stepped up to tell the Minns Labor government that they need to make good on their promise and establish the GKNP, in full.’
