Three people are dead as a result of three separate crashes on the Northern Rivers over the weekend.
Tweed Byron police on Sunday night said they were investigating the discovery of a man’s body on the Pacific Highway near Byron Bay.
Emergency services responded to reports around 7:15pm Sunday of multiple cars crashing into an unoccupied motorcycle on the M1 near Billinudgel.
Attending officers said they were told three cars crashed into the motorbike before a member of the public found the alleged male rider’s body nearby.
Three drivers were reportedly taken to hospital for mandatory testing and the Crash Investigation Unit was called in.
All involved vehicles were seized for forensic examination.
Deadly Bruxner Highway crash
Meanwhile, officers in the Richmond Police District reported attending two deadly crashes over the weekend.
An 82-old woman died when the Toyota sedan she was driving crashed into a semi-trailer on the Bruxner Highway at Goonellabah around 6pm Friday, officers said.
Paramedics tried to revive her but she died on-scene.
A 58-year-old man driving the semi-trailer is reported to have survived the crash without injury.
Officers say he underwent mandatory testing at Lismore Base Hospital.
Man killed crashing car into Ballina building
On Saturday afternoon, police said, a 63-year-old man died when the vehicle he was driving crashed into a building in West Ballina’s River Street.
The building was significantly damaged, triggering a power shut-down in the surrounding area.
State Emergency Services personnel were called in for emergency repairs.
Paramedics tried to revive the driver but he died around 2.30 pm on-scene.
Police are to prepare reports on all three deaths for the Coroner.
