A quick-thinking driver on the Bruxner Highway managed to pull over, get out and extinguish flames coming from a crashed car in peak-hour traffic last Friday.
Everyone involved in the crash survived, police said later, but a a 21-year-old woman treated at the scene for serious injuries was airlifted to Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition.
She’d been the passenger in a Holden Commodore that had crashed into a Nissan Pulsar on the highway about a kilometre west of Ballina Road, the police report read.
Officers said they were told the crash happened after items fell from a trailer being towed by a Toyota Aurion.
One of the vehicles broke out in flames that were soon ‘extinguished by a passing motorist’.
Three hospitalised after crash
Paramedics arrived around 6pm and treated a 22-year-old woman who had been driving the Holden for serious injuries before taking her to Lismore Base Hospital in a stable condition.
A 44-year-old man said to have been driving the Nissan was also airlifted to Gold Coast University Hospital with multiple injuries but in a stable condition, while the driver of the Toyota escaped without physical injury.
Police said their Crash Investigation Unit was working to determine the cause of the crash and anyone with information or dash cam footage was urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 111.
