A 40-year-old man is to face court next month accused of driving with more than three times the legal limit of alcohol in his breath and with cannabis in his system.
Police say they were patrolling Keith Compton Drive at Tweed Heads, around 8.30pm Saturday when they came across a white van with damage to its front and windscreen.
When officers checked, they learned the vehicle was alleged to have been involved in an incident in Queensland earlier that evening.
The van is said to have stopped a short time later, whereupon police subjected the 40-year-old male driver to a roadside breath test.
He is said to have returned a positive result, prompting officers to take him to Tweed Heads Police Station for a secondary breath analysis they say returned a reading of 0.165.
A subsequent drug test is also alleged to have returned a positive result for cannabis.
He‘s been charged in relation to drink and drug driving, as well as for driving a motor vehicle during a disqualification period.
More charges are possible depending on the outcome of a secondary drug sample analysis taken during arrest.
Police say he received conditional bail, was banned from driving for 24 hours and is due to appear at Tweed Heads Local Court on Monday 23 February 2026.
