The Byron Creek Bridge at Bangalow is to remain closed until further notice and will likely only reopen to light traffic.
The bridge has been closed since 9 January when a fire broke out in a reported makeshift campsite underneath the bridge.
The closure impacts what is considered an important route between Bangalow and both Suffolk Park and Byron Bay, affecting thousands of drivers each day.
Byron Shire Council Works Manager Sam Frumpui said in a media release last week staff were still waiting for a specialist engineers’ report and were doing all they could to get the bridge open.
Safety warning against moving road barriers
Staff understood people were frustrated, Mr Frumpui said, but asked for patience and for people not to remove road barriers until the bridge was open.
Tampering with the barriers could further compromise the bridge and result in an even longer time to get it open, Mr Frumpui said.
‘It is a big safety risk,’ the works manager said, adding that the bridge would likely only be re-opened to light traffic.
Council staff said they had spoken to school bus companies and other essential services about the closure and that service providers had made alternative arrangements for their routes.
