Domestic violence related offences decreased as a percentage of all offences recorded in the Tweed Byron Police District last week, local officers reported but there were multiple charges included for choking and also for child sex abuse.

One person was accused of sexual intercourse without consent of a child and police have listed ‘aggravated sexual assault with victim under 16 years old’ among recorded offences.

Three people faced charges related to sex abuse.

Domestic violence offences typically represent around a quarter to a third of all offences in the district each week but the most recent report showed the figure had decreased to around sixteen per cent.

Tweed/Byron Police say that ‘Over the past week (19-25 March), 55 people were charged with a total of 97 criminal offences’.

They are as follows:

• Domestic Violence (DV): 6 males and 3 females were charged with 16 domestic violence related offences, including charges for choking, using offensive weapons, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, destroying property, and contravening apprehended violence orders..

• Traffic: 33 charges for traffic related offences, including multiple police pursuits, driving while disqualified and driving under the influence of drugs or with a prescribed concentration of alcohol.

• Property: 6 charges for property offences, including shoplifting and possessing goods suspected of being stolen.

• Drugs: 4 charges for possessing drugs, including 3 persons charged for cultivating prohibited drugs.

• Sexual: 3 people charged with 6 sexual offences, including aggravated sexual assault with victim under 16 years old, sexual intercourse with a child, sexual intercourse without consent, filming private parts without consent, and produce and possess child abuse material.

Significant arrests:

• A 21-year-old male was charged by specialist investigators with allegedly committing multiple sexual offences upon a teenage girl whom he allegedly met online. He remains bail refused to next appear at the Ballina Local Court on 21 May 2026.

• A 43-year-old male was charged with allegedly filming private parts without consent as well as producing and possess child abuse material. He remains bail refused to next appear at the Tweed Heads Local Court on 7 April 2026.

• A 45-year-old male was charged by specialist investigators with allegedly possessing digital blueprints for the manufacture of firearms, possessing a prohibited weapon, and unauthorised possession of a firearm and pistol. He remains bail refused to next appear at the Tweed Heads Local Court on 30 March 2026.

• A 41-year-old- male was charged with 2 counts of allegedly wounding persons with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, after a serious incident at Coorabell early on Friday 20 March 2026. The male allegedly drove to a rural location and struck 2 males with his vehicle, causing severe injuries, one with life threatening injuries. The male remains bail refused to next appear at the Lismore Local Court on 20 May 2026.

• A 27-year-old female was charged with alleged possession of drugs, police pursuit and failing to disclose her identity. She was given Police conditional bail to next appear at the Tweed Heads Local Court on 4 May 2026.

• A 35-year-old female was charged on Friday 20 March 2026, with 10 serious alleged offences, relating to multiple police pursuits in a stolen vehicle through Banora Point, Tumbulgum and Murwillumbah. Road spikes were deployed and a police vehicle was rammed before she was arrested. An outstanding warrant was also executed. She remains bail refused to next appear at the Tweed Heads Local Court on 13 April 2026.

Court outcome:

• A 33-year-old female was charged on 19 July 2025, with 2 counts of dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm while under the influence, mid-range drink driving, driving a vehicle with illicit drug present, and driving with a child not restrained. She was involved in a motor vehicle collision and her 2 children sustained serious injuries. She was convicted at Murwillumbah Local Court and sentenced to 3 years imprisonment to be served in the community by way of an Intensive Corrections Order and monitoring by NSW Community Corrections. She was also disqualified from driving for 3 years.
