Nine unique and sustainable homes will open their doors to the public across the Byron Shire this Sunday, 17 May, as part of Sustainable House Day.
Byron Shire Council say, “Participating homes will be open in Bangalow, Byron Bay, Main Arm, Mullumbimby and Ocean Shores with everything from off-grid energy solutions to clever retrofits to flood resilient builds and architect-designed homes”.
Byron Shire Mayor Sarah Ndiaye said that Sustainable House Day was a chance to get a sneak-peak behind closed doors to see what’s possible.
“Whether you’d like to find ways to reduce energy bills, improve comfort, build resilience or just admire great ideas and design, it’s a unique chance to learn through other people’s experiences and get a lot of inspiration for your own home and life,” she said.
Mayor Ndiaye said the event aligns strongly with Council’s commitment to sustainability and community-led climate action.
“Events like Sustainable House Day empower our community with knowledge,” she said. “They help turn interest into action and support locals to make informed choices that benefit both households and the environment.”
“Visit one home or make a day of it and visit several!”
Open homes in the Byron Shire include:
Bangalow: Stone House, Poured Earth House.
Byron Bay: Garden Studio, Earthen Retreat.
Main Arm: Off Grid Engineers Dream.
Mullumbimby: Garden Gem Backyard Retreat, Kingfisher House, Gondwana Textiles House and Artists Studio.
Ocean Shores: Retrofit 1980s Treehouse.
“Byron Shire Council is a proud supporter of Sustainable House Day 2026, partnering with event organiser Renew to promote sustainable, climate-ready housing across the Shire.
