A 37-year-old man is to face court today after allegedly assaulting an 82-year-old man on Tweed Heads Friday morning.

Police on Monday said they would allege the younger man pushed the senior over after passing him on the footpath along Boyd Street, Tweed Heads, before leaving the scene.

Officers said the elderly victim suffered a serious injury and was admitted to hospital for treatment.

The accused man was arrested in Wharf Street, Tweed Heads, about 6.30am Sunday, before being charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and refused bail.

Police said Tweed Heads officers were committed to public safety and had high visibility proactive local patrols ongoing.
