When Grant Cook died in a tragic rugby league accident in 2016, the Cookie Cup began as a memorial match between the Mullumbimby Giants, who he played for from U6s, and the Murwillumbah Mustangs.
The tenth anniversary year has been a special one for his children Mia and Carter Cook who have both grown up playing local sport.
Following the Saturday, 5 September Junior Netball grand final between Mullumbimby and Ocean Shores Mia was the recipient of the Clare Wallwork Memorial Award after her team’s grand final win over Ocean Shores.
‘Mia has inherited her dad’s love of local sport, community and competition,’ said Mia’s mum, Colleen. ‘She is always willing to have a go, and her competitive nature is certainly something she got from her dad.’
‘The timing of Mia receiving the award, on the ten-year anniversary of Grant’s passing, has been a beautiful reminder that although someone may be taken from us too soon, their spirit and the things they loved can continue through their children.’
Carter is also continuing that connection to his father through his connection to local sport. ‘Carter like his father is also passionate about cricket and honours his dad’s connection with the Mullumbimby Brunswick Cricket Club by presenting the annual Grant Cook Memorial Award. Last season’s recipient was local player Heath Godbee,’ said Colleen.
