Haven turns one: a three-day celebration

Haven’s story starts with a supermarket. The venue at 102 Jonson Street occupies the former Woolworths building, a site presented as a temporary home for music and community, before the building is eventually redeveloped. Instead of hiding that impermanence, the team made it the point. The space was built entirely from salvaged materials, turning a commercial site into a cultural one which is reminiscent of a futuristic Pan-Asian set from Blade Runner and Ghost in the Shell.

Ben Bewley

Artist in focus

  1. TURN YOUR STORY INTO A SCULPTURE

For Northern Rivers sculptor Ben Bewley, sculpture is a way of telling stories that words cannot.

He works primarily with reclaimed timber and driftwood, drawing inspiration from the natural world allowing the characteristics and history of each piece to guide him.

Bewley creates animate forms that invite viewers to connect with something deeper within themselves. His practice explores humanity’s innate connection to the Earth, seeking to inspire a renewed relationship with the living world and a deeper appreciation of our place within it.

A significant milestone in Ben’s artistic journey came when his piece Invocation received the flagship Shillam Award at the Brisbane Sculpture Festival in August, earlier this year. The recognition has supported him to keep pushing the boundaries of his practice and sharing his work with wider audiences.

Now entering a new chapter as a father, Ben finds himself reflecting more deeply on life, legacy and the world we leave for future generations.

Ben welcomes opportunities to collaborate with individuals, businesses, architects and interior designers to create meaningful, bespoke sculptural works, alongside exhibiting select large and small-scale originals in resorts, retreats, shopfronts and other considered indoor and outdoor spaces. His work brings sculpture into diverse environments beyond the traditional gallery setting.

3. ART IN THE HEART OF MULLUMBIMBY: EXHIBITION 12

Mullumbimby Comprehensive Health Centre is once again transformed into a gallery as the H’Art Gallery unveils its 12th exhibition. With ten artists and more than 30 works across painting, printmaking, and mixed media, this show celebrates both the reach and intimacy of local creativity.

Bessminda Groves brings muscular emotional weight to oil on canvas – her works Hope is a Thing with Claws and Happenstance bristle with tension and surrender. Bill Veale’s sweeping coastal acrylics trace the Broken Head headlands with quiet awe. Blair Ferguson offers tender, small-scale studies of local rivers and beaches in ink and oil. Brendan Kelly returns with bold, conceptually-charged work, including the striking Corellas. Edward Sach contributes a deeply personal piece navigating cancer survival with colour and grace.

Karena Wynn-Moylan’s luminous oils move from coastal light to fallen birds, always with reverence. Marika Bryant fills the room with lyrical mixed media that blur landscape and lived experience. Sally Green brings richly textured abstracts drawing on outback pigments and arctic cool alike. Spero Jones delivers visceral, polymer-varnished works pulsing with elemental force. And curator Solveig anchors the exhibition with signature graphic impressions – from moonlit botanicals to deep neural explorations.

Together they remind us that art doesn’t just decorate a health centre – it heals it.

A new season on the plate at The Imperial Hotel

As summer approaches, the Imperial Hotel in Murwillumbah has once again let the seasons shape what’s on the plate.

Stone fruit season has arrived!

There’s something special about biting into a perfectly ripe peach or nectarine, with juice running down your chin and the taste of summer in every mouthful. Stone fruit season is now underway, and local grower Rajesh Kumar is bringing a beautiful selection of fresh fruit to the farmers’ markets.
