Byron Bay’s increasingly porous height limits are set to face another test, with the developer behind a proposed mixed-use hotel on Jonson Street claiming recent approvals have established a precedent for allowing buildings to rise above the town’s planning controls.

As a Mullumbimby resident, I want to raise what I believe is a significant issue facing our community: the disconnect between Byron Shire Council’s (BSC) desire for more housing, and the reality faced by ordinary residents trying to provide it.

For a development that has around 98 per cent of the local community in opposition, doesn’t meet the towns development control plan, and fails to meet the objectives laid out in the Mullumbimby Masterplan for the entrance to town, it is no surprise that some councillors have finally asked the Mullumbimby Residents Association what it would take for them to support the development application, removing the only car park in central Mullumbimby at 57 Station Street to build flats.

Fletcher Street Cottage's future has been secured, with Byron Shire Council granting a 15-year licence for Byron Bay's dedicated daytime support hub to continue operating from 18 Fletcher Street.
