The goalposts have changed from underground cables to the much cheaper option of big NBN towers radiating microwaves across the environment, one being proposed for Main Arm.

Community fears are expunged by clever information sessions where individual residents, as they arrive, are approached by a spin doctor in a tie and are passed down a line of professionals parroting scripts, bamboozling objections. Community concerns are not aired and shared openly.

All electrical systems and devices radiate an invisible electric and magnetic field (EMF) and we are continually immersed in them.  However, is it an acceptable risk to up the ante with this new technology?

Can NBN Co give a watertight guarantee that microwaves from their towers are harmless?

Deborah Lilly, Mullumbimby

Support The Echo

Keeping the community together and the community voice loud and clear is what The Echo is about. More than ever we need your help to keep this voice alive and thriving in the community.

Like all businesses we are struggling to keep food on the table of all our local and hard working journalists, artists, sales, delivery and drudges who keep the news coming out to you both in the newspaper and online. If you can spare a few dollars a week – or maybe more – we would appreciate all the support you are able to give to keep the voice of independent, local journalism alive.

  1. Band 5 UHF is the frequency spectrum getting sold off for the 4G network.Band 5 UHF was used by the Patterson St,Murwillumbah,OceanShores TV translators for many years and at a higher power output than the new NBN transmitters will be..A translator receives it signal from a main transmitter tower ie Mt Nardi, but must change polarity to retransmit..All the people living in these areas have already been irradiated and bombarded for many years both from analogue and digital signals.Could this be why this community is so polarized on many issues!

  2. Are you aware that using lights in your home bathes you in electromagnetic radiation (EMR)? Some other sources are: the sun, your radio (if you can listen to it that’s because there is EMR at the radio frequencies in your room. We live in a sea of EMR except for those who live in caves far underground and they probably should worry about radiation from radon.
