The sleepy village of Tyalgum deep in the Tweed Valley will spring to life this weekend for its annual classical musical festival which showcases acclaimed performers from around the country.
The Tyalgum Music Festival, well established on the Tweed cultural calendar after running for 23 years, proudly boasts of bringing music, art and nature to Australia’s Green Cauldron.
This weekend will be no different with an exciting mix of music performed by pianists, singers, wind and string players to play in the village’s historic hall with its renowned acoustics.
It was the old wooden hall built in 1908 (or ‘Tyalgum Literary Institute’)’ that inspired concert violinist Carmel Kaine to launch a Classical Music Festival in 1991.
Since then, the September festival has been held annually and ranked as one of Australia’s top classical events.
Organisers say the main street of Tyalgum, Coolman Street, will tomorrow and Sunday become ‘a vibrant, bubbling cauldron of live music’.
‘Our programs traverse the globe from Tyalgum with our own commissioned works to Spain and to Brazil with the Queensland Conservatorium of Music Brazilian Band,’ they say.
The festival’s program ‘is designed to embrace all ages with all concerts being both accessible and sophisticated with an outstanding line up of musicians. A Sunday morning family concert will appeal to both child and parent.’
Performers include chamber music ensemble The Lunaire Collective, award-winning trio of jazzers Trichotomy, acclaimed pianist Tamara Anna Cislowska, who will perform works of the famous late Australian composer Peter Sculthorpe.
The Boxties, an exceptional new Queensland ensemble named after an Irish creamy pancake, will join the nationally renowned Song Company on stage.
The village shops will also get involved in the festival, offering ‘pop-up’ concerts in their shopfronts during the weekend and the Tyalgum market will also be held that day.
A free guided nature walk with Dr Jean-Marc Hero will be conducted to surrounding national parks on both days from 8am, starting from the community hall.
