Police are investigating the vicious assault of a man who went to help a woman who told him her car had broken down on the highway between Casino and Tenterfield last night.
The man was hit on the head from behind with a chain as he looked under her vehicle’s bonnet. He fell to the ground where he was then set on by both the man and woman, but was able to run back to his car.
Police say the incident occurred at around 8pm on Wednesday when the man was driving along the Bruxner Highway and flagged down by the woman standing beside her car .
After the attack, the victim drove towards Casino before pulling over on the side of the road and calling Triple Zero (000).
Police and paramedics attended the scene and the man was taken to Casino Hospital for treatment of minor injuries including lacerations to his head and body.
A search of the area was conducted but police were unable to find the two assailants.
The man has been described as having a medium build, wearing dark jeans and lace-up boots, while the woman is described as being 30 to 40 years old with a tanned complexion, dark shoulder-length hair, a stud in her right nostril and wearing a grey hooded top and dark pants.
They are believed to have fled the scene in a two-door Hyundai Excel hatchback.
Detectives from Richmond Local Area Command are investigating.
