Cover up and spray is the message from NSW Health, who say mosquito-borne viruses are on the rise this autumn.
There has been a seven-fold increase in detections of the Ross River Fever virus across this state compared with this time last year, according to NSW Health.
The virus, which can cause flu-like symptoms, is spread by certain types of female mosquitoes and is not contagious between people.
“These infections can cause symptoms including tiredness, rash, fever, and sore and swollen joints,” said Director of Communicable Diseases Dr Vicky Sheppeard. ”
The symptoms usually resolve after several days, but some people may experience these symptoms for weeks or even months.”
While NSW’s north coast has been most affected, people in Sydney around the Georges River, Homebush and Hawkesbury areas have also been warned.
To avoid being bitten, Dr Sheppeard has advised people to cover up when outside during dawn and dusk and apply repellent.
To limit places where mosquitoes can breed, get rid of items around the home where water can stagnate.
