A study into the current levels of greenhouse gas emissions within the Byron Shire will be presented by five teams at the Renew Fest, to be held at the Mullumbimby Showgrounds on June 18.
Called the Zero Emissions Byron (ZEB) project, co-ordinator Tiffany Harrison says the baseline data identify the highest source of emission and covers energy, buildings, land use, waste and transport.
She says the team found that emissions from the transport sector are roughly three times the amount from the agricultural or land-use sectors.
‘Now the major sources and levels of greenhouse gas emissions have been identified, our teams will start developing action plans to reduce current emissions to zero within ten years.’
Ms Harrison added, ‘This is an exciting first step towards creating a carbon-free future.’
‘The aim of the Zero Emissions Byron project is to protect and sustainably improve the Shire’s economy, while developing resilience to mitigate against the effects of climate change.’
