The fight against fluoride appears far from over with an anti-fluoride group challenging Lismore City Council mayoral candidates to state their position on the fluoridation of the region’s water supply.
The group plans to present a five answer questionnaire to each of the candidates, and is in the process of finalising a Federal Court challenge to the fluoridation of Australian water supplies.
Fluoride Free Northern Rivers spokesperson Lisa Connell said the questionnaire would ask the candidates of their voting intentions if given the opportunity on various aspects that may arise over the next four years regarding water fluoridation.
‘One of the bitterest disputes marring the mayor and the current council was the overturning of the decision not to fluoridate the water supply and cede all approval for fluoridation in Lismore to the NSW Department of Health,’ Ms Connell said.
‘The political upheaval by the refusal of council to put the issue as a referendum question at this election’s and allow the residents a choice whether they wish to be purportedly medicated through the water supply has not been forgotten.
‘Since the 1960’s this community through it’s representatives, no matter the political persuasion, have staunchly refused to allow our water supply to be a conduit to the disposal of waste material from the, aluminium, phosphate and fertiliser industry.
‘It is a large blot on Councillor Dowell’s legacy to be the only mayor in Lismore history to support the city’s water supply being fluoridated.
‘The public are not been informed that the fluoride now being placed in the water supply is manufactured for industrial use, is up to 10 per cent contaminated with heavy metals and is not a registered or exempt good under the Therapeutics Goods Act.
‘Currently our monitoring has revealed that there has been systemic break downs at Corndale where valves and pipe joins have cracked and leaked high concentrations of fluoridated water into the facility requiring workers in full hazard suit outfits to clean up.
‘Documents through Freedom of Information have also revealed overdose spikes at Dourrouby and Clunes while there is no safety plan in place in cases of environmental and public health accidents.’
Echonetdaily has previously reported that the group are planning to challenge the fluoride industry not only in Lismore, but across Australia, with legal action.
Anti-fluoride activist, Mr Al Oshlack, said the Fluoride Free Northern Rivers group had been corresponding with the Therapeutic Goods Administration which had denied that registering fluoride was its concern.
‘Our challenge is that fluoride, which they claim is good for us, is not registered with the TGA nor does it have an exemption,’ he said.
‘They say it’s not up to us if you don’t agree, it’s a court matter.’
Mr Oshlack told Echonetdaily that a brief was being completed and would soon be sent to a barrister.
