Shark culls not the answer

It has been a confronting and devastating year with a 12-year-old killed by a shark in Sydney and another shark attack in Coogee over the weekend. The NSW government has said there is nothing off the table in response to the latest shark incident. But it is vital that we don’t just start going out there and randomly culling sharks.

Comedy in Court with Ms Stella

It’s her last night in town and Ms Stella takes Mullumbimby hostage with her savage dark wit at the Court House Hotel’s Open Mic Comedy Night. With a bunch of very new and very exciting comics on stage, this is a show to see… and it’s going to be going quarterly so it will be three months until the next one!

So get on down, grab some wild and wanton free comedy. 8pm Thursday!

Papa Puns

Conceived at the Melbourne Comedy Festival Dad. Joke. is an ageing man’s howl of rage and joy about parenting in a world gone mental. Watching hot young comics Zoe Coombes-Marr and Rhys Nicholson tear it up – as a grey-haired no-one doing his first Melbourne show – Mark thought he must come over to his audiences as the comedian’s dad. He thought, let’s roll with that punch… be the comedian’s dad!

With that kindling, a new show emerged; Mark comes out as the comedian’s dad – because his son, the scheduled entertainment hasn’t turned up.

Mark Swivel… is a writer and performer (and lawyer, sort of). His last show How Deep Is Your Love? toured to Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Darwin, Mullum and Gympie! Bookings: www.trybooking.com/216331.

Byron Bay Film Festival’s Virtual Reality!

Byron Bay Film Festival is this year poised to boldly go beyond the ‘reality’ of the silver screen, with an exploration of the potential of virtual reality (VR) in an artist’s palette. The organisers are offering an artist-oriented program, called Ncube8, to ‘open new dimensions’ to talented visual creatives keen to take their art to another level.

The first of the workshops is at the Lismore Regional Gallery this Monday.

Registration for a workshop, or application to become an Ncube8 artist, can be submitted through the BBFF website www.bbff.com.au/ncube8.

UFOs & angels

Okay, so the space sister got the writeup about the space brothers a little incorrect. Turns out this space sister was channelling some old energy systems… and got the venue and date mixed up. So if you want to find out about UFOs and angels then Sunday 14 August is going to be the date when your new age dawns. A free talk and presentation about the Masters of Wisdom where they outline the role of the space brothers (I do hope there are space sisters too!), crop circles and new energy systems are explained, along with who actually authors miracles and there’s an introduction into transmission meditation. All this in just more than two hours!

At the Byron Community Centre Cavanbah Room, Sunday 14 August 2–4.30pm. With a transmission meditation workshop on Monday 15 August at the Byron Community Centre Verandah Room. Profoundness is exactly like where you are right now, only much, much better.

No Lights Baby No Lycra

No Lights No Lycra is a dance community that started in 2009 by unruly dance students that has grown a presence in more than 70 locations across the world. Every week Roo shares his love of dance with the Byron community. No Lights No Lycra is a dance space where you can completely let go, shake out the stresses of your busy week, and lose yourself in the music and the physicality of your body. There is no light, no lycra, no teacher, no steps to learn, no technique, just free movement for one hour. NLNL is a daggy, non-pretentious place to completely be yourself. How good is that?

The Byron session is on every Tuesday from 7.15pm for $5 at the Byron Bay Public School Hall, Carlyle St (opposite number 19). Roo makes it a really fun and welcoming place to dance and have fun! It would be great to come down to the session to have a try or get in touch with Roo to organise a feature.
