The taxman provided a timely reminder at Lismore Local Court yesterday that is an offence to not return taxation information.
A total of 134 charges of either failing to return information when requested, or failing to comply with a court order, were listed before Magistrate David Heilpern.
The charges were brought by the Australian Taxation Department against eight individuals and seven companies from across the Northern Rivers.
Individuals and companies that fail to lodge taxation returns or business activity statements over a period of time can face large fines or imprisonment.
Failure to comply with requirements under taxation law is a Commonwealth law which comes under the Taxation Administration Act of 1953.
Under the act, a first offence attracts a fine of up to $2,200.
Anyone who has been convicted of two or more offences faces a fine of up to $5,500 and/or 12 months jail.
