Tropical Fuck Storm Blows into Byron

Hotel Great Northern | Friday| 9pm | $35.20

A Punk rock absurdist Tropical Fuck Storm is about to strike – prepare yourself for a sonic assault with a live show that is irreverent, intense and freaking funny.

This ain’t no shit boring macho line up. TFS is headed up by Drones frontman Gareth Liddiard with Fiona Kitschin, Lauren Hammel and Erica Dunn. That’s right, a token male up front.

‘You don’t see many bands like that,’ says Liddiard. ‘Some people think it’s a female thing if it has a female singer. But it’s almost more unusual. Although it wasn’t deliberate. These are some of the most interesting musicians I know.’

Is it art punk? Experimental rock? Blues rock? Noise? Who knows.

‘We are all a bit dodgy, punk rock is like that. If we do an electro funk number it sounds a bit dodgy, but it makes disco sound awesome.’

‘We don’t want to play the same old shit, so we’ve tried anything and everything. Tooling around trying stuff we would never do. It was all so rushed. We had a lot of gigs in between – I am completely open to what works. Some people hop around in genres, but those people seem to be really good at what they are doing, so if they do a new genre it’s so good it’s boring. We don’t have that problem.’

Going out thrashing hard, TFS take on political themes with anarchic abandon.

‘There is endless material and new perspectives and new ways of expressing stuff. We need to find funny ways of looking at things more than ever,’ says Liddiard, who released the debut LP last year A Laughing Death in Meatspace.

Tropical Fuck Storm play the Hotel Great Northern on Friday from 9pm. Tix are $35.20 online at thenorthern.com.au
