Professor Ed Davis, National Vice President ABC Friends.

Professor Ed Davis, National Vice President ABC Friends says that while the ABC is a national treasure, highly regarded and highly trusted, it remains under serious threat.

Professor Davis was addressing the AGM of ABC Friends Northern Rivers in Bangalow last Saturday.

Davis said that the current drastic cuts of another $84m to ABC funding over the next three years, the loss of further jobs and the recent AFP media raids were major causes of concern.

‘The AFP raids have sparked outrage across the media and resulted in a “Your Right to Know” campaign supported by the ABC, News Ltd, Channel 9 and other major media outlets.’

On a more positive note, Professor Davis expressed optimism about Ita Buttrose’s appointment as Board Chair, despite the fact that ABC Friends had previously registered grave concerns about making another ‘captain’s pick’.

Support The Echo

Keeping the community together and the community voice loud and clear is what The Echo is about. More than ever we need your help to keep this voice alive and thriving in the community.

Like all businesses we are struggling to keep food on the table of all our local and hard working journalists, artists, sales, delivery and drudges who keep the news coming out to you both in the newspaper and online. If you can spare a few dollars a week – or maybe more – we would appreciate all the support you are able to give to keep the voice of independent, local journalism alive.

  1. Outrages everywhere & all uncalled for. AFP raids….. we
do have ‘the right to know’ as does all media & especially
the ABC. Being dictated to almost daily by our PM goes
well beyond his standing. For example – free speech, the
right to protest got another king-hit on Nov. 2nd when
The Times reports “I’ll punish Climate Activists” Morrison
tells miners. Yes – legislation to outlaw Climate Activism,
banning protests, boycotts & disruptive strikes is the new
game-plan finally admitted. Call in the ABC. Fear-Gate
    is a free-for-all.

  2. The ABC !
Hell yes,… I remember them and 2LM, 2NR, 2GF,2SM,Double J,and what great memories. Fifty years ago they were functional and they provided relevent news ,comedy and music but that was before the internet and video killed the radio stars.
It was also before the right wing fascists turned what was left of the ABC into a cheer-squad for the government, covering nothing but completely innocuous drivel and the constant hour programs devoted to flogging some, justifiably, unknown’s pathetic attempt to write a book on their own self- aggrandisement.

That takes stock of the radio today and leaves television, which while drawing on the self- censorship evident on the airwaves, bravely exposes a collection of dead horses or sheep by the boat- load or the total but obvious greed and incompetence that has destroyed the Murray/Darling and the once Great Barrier Reef .
All this, however is only a surprisingly effective ploy to divert attentions from the real issues ,such as who was it that illegally agreed to invade Iraq ? Will those troops be charged as war-criminals, How long before climate change sterilizes the planet and why is every man, woman and child contaminated with PFAS

The ABC is dead, long-live the AFP……..G”)
