A police operation is currently underway after a vehicle plunged into the Richmond River earlier today.

About 11.45am today, emergency services were called to River Drive, South Ballina, following reports a vehicle had left the road and driven into the Richmond River.

The female front-seat passenger was able to escape from the vehicle; however, it’s believed the driver is still trapped inside.

Officers from Richmond Police District, Marine Area Command, SES, NSW Ambulance, NSW Maritime, Marine Rescue and NSW Surf Life Saving are all at the scene working to retrieve the vehicle.

PolAir and police divers have since been deployed to the location to assist in the operation.

No further information is available at this time.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000 or https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au. Information is treated in strict confidence. The public is reminded not to report crime via NSW Police social media pages.

Like all businesses we are struggling to keep food on the table of all our local and hard working journalists, artists, sales, delivery and drudges who keep the news coming out to you both in the newspaper and online.
